Action Item: Calibrate RTU Load Bars – 8000 Feed Intake

Technical Service - Technical Guide

This document sets out the step-by-step instructions for completing calibration of the Feed Intake RTU Load Bar. The purpose of calibration is to ensure that the scales in the RTU are functioning correctly and collecting correct data.

Feed Intake RTU Load Bar calibrations should be carried out whenever:

  • Replacing an RTU, or
  • Starting a new trial.

CALIBRATE FEED INTAKE RTU LOAD BARS PROCEDURE

To calibrate the Vytelle SENSE™ Feed Intake system you will need the following items:

  • 50 lb. certified calibration weight (please use the certified calibration weight that was provided with the system),
  • Feed Intake Test Wand, and
  • Take note of time that calibrations were conducted.

Calibrate Load Bars if Starting a New Trial Procedure:

If starting a new trial all nodes on trial need to be calibrated and troughs emptied.

  1. Ensure that the space between the load bars and the frame is clean and free of debris.
  2. Ensure that there is no rubbing on or under the trough.
  3. Tip: Use a screwdriver or an air compressor to clean the area between the load bars and the frame.
  4. Starting at the first trough, place the 50 lbs. certified weight into the trough.
  5. Wait approx. 2 seconds for the system to level.
  6. Without touching the trough, hold the beep wand in the center of the trough with the black tip facing up. Allow the beep wand to beep for 15 beeps.
  7. Remove the test wand and certified calibration weight.
  8. Repeat this process on all troughs that will be on trial in sequential order. For example, start at Node 1 and move to Node 2, Node 3, etc.
  9. Record the time and certified weight used to calibrate in the pre-trial checklist.
  10. Once this information is recorded in the pre-trial checklist application the TSR will use this information to confirm the baselines of the calibrations.

Calibrate Load Bars if Replacing an Individual RTU Procedure:

If replacing only one RTU only the node with the RTU being replaced needs to be calibrated. Note: you do not need to empty the trough.

  1. Ensure that the space between the load bars and the frame is clean and free of debris.
  2. Ensure that there is no rubbing on or under the trough.
  3. Tip: Use a screwdriver or an air compressor to clean the area between the load bars and the frame.
  4. Place the 50 lbs. certified weight into the trough that the RTU was replaced at.
  5. Wait approx. 2 seconds for the system to level.
  6. Without touching the trough, hold the beep wand in the center of the trough with the black tip facing up. Allow the beep wand to beep for 15 beeps.
  7. Remove the test wand and certified calibration weight.
  8. Repeat this process on any other troughs that had the RTU replaced.
  9. Leave a trial note or contact your TSR with the time and weight used for calibration.
