Action Item: Underfeeding – 8000 Feed Intake

Technical Services - Technical Guide

Underfeeding the Feed Intake troughs can lead to:

1. Increased competition at the Feed Intake troughs,

2. Inaccurate Feed Intake as the less dominant animals are not in a free choice feed situation, and

3. Failed day(s) of data for the affected pen.

HOW TO CORRECT UNDERFEEDING

To correct underfeeding you will need to either:

1. Feed more at the current feeding schedule. Ensuring that you adhere to the feeding guidelines (see Vytelle recommended feeding guidelines below).

2. Spread out the feed supply events. Or,

3. Feed more often or decrease the stocking density in the affected pen.

HOW TO SEE UNDERFEEDING ON THE DAQ SOFTWARE?

To visualize underfeeding on the DAQ software use the program View Reports or View Weights.

Underfeeding – compared to the other Feed Intake nodes it was emptied quicker than the other nodes.

VYTELLE RECOMMENDED FEEDING GUIDELINES

• Do not feed more than 8-13 animals per trough. (8 bulls, 10 finish weight heifers/steers, 12 calves).

• Feed 2-3 times a day.

• Feed no higher than the bolt line in the trough.

• Ensure animals cannot access feed without putting their head through the neck restriction bars.

• Ensure only one animal can access the feed trough at a time.

• After feeding pull feed away from animal side of the trough

• When feeding animals under 150 kg (330 lbs.) the troughs require a sub-floor or insert. This allows younger animals to reach the bottom of the trough. This will reduce the capacity of the trough approx. 50 kg (110 lbs.).
